Sonia’s Homemade Coconut Milk

I always have fresh coconut milk on hand for smoothies, soups and recipes. It is lactose free and a wonderful source vitamins and good fats. You never have to buy tinned coconut milk when you have desiccated coconut on hand! I always make my own – it’s easy, organic, 100% natural, more nutritious and avoids the BPA’s and additives in tinned varieties. Try it!



  • 1 – 2 Cups of Organic Shredded Coconut (depending on how much coconut milk you need)
  • Boiling water
    (+ you will need a nut bag)

Step 1: Place the coconut into a glass jug and pour just enough boiling water over it to cover it (err on the side of caution – don’t put in too much water otherwise it will be overly diluted – you can always add more).

Step 2: Let it sit for ½ hour.

Step 3: Place the jug contents (i.e. the soaked coconut and water) into your Vitamix (or high quality blender) and blend at maximum speed for approx. 2 minutes.

Step 4: Pour the contents into your nut bag (or sieve) and drain the liquid from the sediment.

You now have coconut milk! It can be used in place of cow’s milk in any recipe.
